The public weekend opened up with the official opening ceremony, which included speeches from local, postal, and railroad representatives, including the M&E's Chief Operating Officer, Gordon Fuller.
Following the speeches, a railcar appeared from the west, and off stepped the characters featured on the Celebrate the Century stamps for a parade. Once the ceremony was completed, the CTC Express opened for tours, train rides departed, and the park area was the site of food vendors, postal merchandise sales, contests, dancing, and other activities. The postal merchandise tent was a very popular place during the weekend. Anything with a stamp on it could be canceled on either day with a special pictorial cancellation that was created for the weekend.
