Why Morristown Matters
As America celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, few communities can claim a deeper connection to the nation's founding than Morristown, New Jersey.
Known as the "Military Capital of the American Revolution," Morristown served as General George Washington's headquarters during some of the most critical years of the war for independence. Washington and the Continental Army encamped here during the winters of 1777 and 1779–1780, using the area as a strategic base from which to defend the fledgling nation and coordinate military operations.

The winter of 1779–1780 was particularly significant. Faced with one of the harshest winters on record, thousands of Continental soldiers endured extreme cold, shortages of food and supplies, and difficult living conditions in nearby Jockey Hollow. Despite these hardships, the army emerged stronger and more disciplined, helping pave the way for the eventual American victory.
Washington himself established his headquarters at the Ford Mansion in Morristown, where many of the decisions that shaped the future of the United States were made. Today, the site remains preserved as part of the Morristown National Historical Park, serving as a reminder of the determination and sacrifice that secured American independence.
Morristown's location at the crossroads of important transportation and communication routes made it strategically vital during the Revolution. More than two centuries later, that tradition continues. Railroads, highways, and businesses still connect the region to the broader economy, making Morristown a place where history and progress meet.

As M&E 26 travels the rails of New Jersey, it carries with it a reminder that the story of America was shaped not only in famous battlefields and halls of government, but also right here in Morristown.
